Style Guidelines for Contributors (Adobe PDF)

Proposing an Article:

Unsolicited proposals for articles and review essays are welcome, but must adhere to the following guidelines.

Prospective authors should send a letter and 500-word abstract of the work they wish to submit to the journal.

The editors are particularly interested in proposals with resonance beyond strictly national historiographies.

Submissions should clearly explain the article’s research question and argument, note the types of sources the author intends to use, and demonstrate the ways that the article will reflect the journal's commitment to publishing work across geographic regions and historical time periods. (Essays in themselves do not need to be “transnational.”) Editors will decide quickly whether they wish to review a full manuscript; authors will then be sent style and submission guidelines.
